Renewing Client FGCU’s Students Innovate to Combat COVID-19
Socially responsive ingenuity like this reminds donors why they support institutions like Florida Gulf Coast University. Higher education has allowed the market to increasingly define it as a private benefit for students when, at its core, it serves a public good for society.
In fact, Scott Presbrey is pursuing his bioengineering degree at FGCU because he wants to “design and manufacture medical devices that improve people’s lives.” It seems like he is getting a head start. Using a 3D printer he is “printing, assembling and donating hundreds of facial shields” for area healthcare workers on the frontlines of the pandemic.
This project also demonstrates the soft skills that FGCU instills in its graduates. Realizing the value of teamwork, Presbrey has drawn on the insights and connections of curriculum design and instructional/educational technology major Adam Nowicki who has joined in this effort and involved 10 schools in the cause. In addition, he’s scaling good by teaching others to follow suit, having produced a two-part YouTube video on their process.
Remember, this is why we do what we do and why we feel a sense of confidence and urgency to seek financial support for the mission of institutions like FGCU that prepare leaders to step up and meet the challenges of their communities and the world head on.
It has been a joy working with FGCU Foundation Executive Director Kitty Green to help her and her outstanding team to develop - and now implement - a plan to optimize their efforts to raise even more money so they can do even more good.
“Working with David Rowe has dramatically decreased the time frame in which we were able to come up with a plan. Because his process achieved buy-in from the team, we will be able to implement the refinements more quickly as well.”
- Kitty Green, FGCU Vice President for Advancement
